LVN to RN in California and the 30-Unit Option

If you're a Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN) in California, you have three main routes to an RN license: an LVN-to-ADN program, advanced placement into a generic ADN or BSN program, or the LVN 30-unit option. They differ in time, degree and what the license lets you do outside California.

Checked against CA BRN and 16 CCR § 1429, Oct 2026

Route 1: LVN-to-ADN programs and advanced placement

The BRN counts five programs that offer only LVN-to-ADN education. Many generic ADN programs also take LVNs: of 89 generic ADN programs, 38 reported a separate LVN track and 56 reported admitting LVNs into the generic program when space is available (BRN report, p. 47). Thirteen programs reported both.

Common ways programs credit your LVN training (BRN Table 60, ADN programs): bridge courses (63.5%), a skills lab course to document competencies (52.9%), credit after completing a specific ADN course (32.9%), direct articulation of LVN coursework (31.8%) and challenge exams (29.4%).

Selection. LVN-to-ADN programs reported ranking by specific criteria (80.0%), interviews (20.0%) and random selection (20.0%) (Table 47).

Programs on the BRN list marked for LVNs only (open programs on the current BRN list; the 2024–25 report counted five, and College of the Siskiyous is not in that report): Allan Hancock College, Carrington College Sacramento, College of the Siskiyous, Gavilan College, Madera College and Mission College. Allan Hancock's page says its application period "is open June 1 – July 31 each year" (checked Oct 12, 2026). See each program's page and the deadlines calendar.

Waitlists. On October 15, 2025, 30 LVNs were on generic ADN program waitlists. It took an average of 3.4 semesters for an LVN to move from the waitlist into the first nursing course (BRN report, p. 47).

Route 2: The LVN 30-unit option

California regulation (16 CCR § 1429) lets a California-licensed LVN qualify to apply for RN licensure after completing additional education that "shall not exceed a maximum of thirty (30) semester or forty-five (45) quarter units." Courses required for vocational nurse licensure don't count toward those units. Schools must offer "objective counseling of this option" and evaluate each LVN applicant individually.

The BRN's exam instructions say the courses must come after LVN licensure. They must be beyond the first year and include theory with concurrent clinical practice in advanced medical-surgical, mental health, psychiatric and geriatric nursing, plus physiology and microbiology.

According to the BRN's 2024–25 report (p. 7), the option takes about 18–24 months and grants no degree.

What schools say:

  • CSU San Bernardino: LVNs who complete the option "may be licensed in the state of California with a 'non-graduate license.' There may be no reciprocity for licensure in any other state." Students sign an acknowledgment during counseling (checked Oct 13, 2026).
  • Mt. San Jacinto College: "The Non-Degree 30-Unit Option is recognized only in the State of California," and completing it "excludes the student from obtaining an Associate of Science Degree in Nursing in California" (checked Oct 13, 2026).

Programs that mention a 30-unit option in SEAPHE's records include California Baptist University, California Northstate University and William Jessup University (BSN programs), alongside community college ADN programs such as Mt. San Jacinto College. Ask each program whether it's currently offered.

2024–25 enrollment (BRN Table 9): 75 new 30-unit option students (48 in ADN programs, 27 in LVN-to-ADN programs) at 4 programs. That's about twice the previous year. 46 students completed a 30-unit option program that year (Table 14, p. 11).

If you might move out of state, or want a BSN or graduate degree later, ask about those plans during the required counseling before choosing the 30-unit option.

Common mistakes

  • Choosing the 30-unit option without the counseling session. Schools are required to provide it, so use it.
  • Assuming LVN coursework counts toward the 30 units. By regulation it doesn't.
  • Missing LVN-specific windows. LVN tracks often have their own dates.
  • Not checking BRN approval. See Is my nursing program BRN-approved?

Frequently asked questions

How long does LVN to RN take in California?

The BRN says the 30-unit option takes about 18–24 months. LVN-to-ADN and advanced-placement timelines vary by program, so check the school's program map.

Can I work as an RN in another state with the 30-unit option?

Possibly not. The BRN says other states that require graduation from a nursing program may not accept it.

Do LVN-to-RN programs use lotteries?

Some do. In 2024–25, 20.0% of LVN-to-ADN programs reported random selection and 80.0% reported ranking (Table 47). See How California nursing schools choose students.
