BRN continuing-approval records for California nursing programs
The California Board of Registered Nursing (BRN) reviews prelicensure RN programs for continuing approval (Business and Professions Code § 2788; 16 CCR §§ 1421 and 1423, as cited in the BRN’s Education/Licensing Committee minutes, Apr 18, 2024). When a review finds that a program isn’t yet in compliance with BRN rules, the Board or its Education/Licensing Committee may defer action on continuing approval while the program addresses the findings. This page lists BRN meeting records where that happened, as the BRN’s own documents describe them. Each row links to the document, says whether it records a committee recommendation or a Board decision, and shows the date we checked it.
Status may have changed. Each row is what a BRN meeting record shows for that date, and some rows are committee recommendations rather than Board decisions. The program’s status may be different today. Check the BRN’s current list of approved programs and ask the program directly before you decide.

What “deferred action” means
In the records below, deferring action meant continuing approval was not granted at that meeting. Some records are Board decisions; others are recommendations from the Education/Licensing Committee, and each row says which. Several records also ask the program to report on its progress, for example with quarterly reports to its assigned nursing education consultant, and to return to the committee and Board. Each row describes what its record says.
A deferred action is not a closure, and it doesn’t by itself mean a program has lost approval. A program with a deferred-action record may still be approved and enrolling, and it may since have addressed the findings and received continuing approval. These are dated meeting records, not a current status.
